Nyamilandu gets seventh nomination

National Football Coaches Committee (NFCC) has become the latest Football Association of Malawi (FAM) affiliate to nominate the incumbent Walter Nyamilandu for presidency.

At its meeting held in Lilongwe on Friday, the NFCC executive committee voted for Nyamilandu, who so far has one challenger—Karonga United owner Willy Yabwanya Phiri—who was nominated by National Football Referees Committee (NFRC).

NFCC general secretary Benjamin Kumwenda yesterday confirmed Nyamilandu’s nomination.

This was Nyamilandu’s seventh nomination after being endorsed by all the three regional associations, National Women Football Committee (NWFC), National Youth Football Committee (NYFC) and Beach Soccer Malawi.

James Mwenda, who is an executive member, was nominated for the position of first-vice president whereas Othaniel Hara, who is also an executive committee member, was nominated for the post of second-vice president.

Daud Ntanthiko was nominated for executive committee member position.

Nyamilandu told our sister paper, The Nation that his majority nomination is just the beginning of a journey to retain his seat.

“It’s early days and this is just a head start. The race has just started. Our team will rest after the final whistle,” he said.

But Yabwanya Phiri says he is not intimidated by Nyamilandu’s dominance in the nominations.

“I don’t care about the incumbent’s dominance. It doesn’t bother me one bit. In fact I am very pumped up. I am the change that Malawians want,” he said. n
