Nyirenda, Kalinda on target as Mafco beat Epac

Mafco recovered from a 1-0 loss to Red Lions at Chitowe last weekend to beat Epac FC 2-0 in a TNM Super League match played at Civo Stadium on Saturday.

Goals from Welani Nyirenda and Callisto Kalinda in the first-half were enough for Stereo Gondwe’s side.

Mafco featured a compact midfield comprising Patrick Masanjala, Kelvin Mkandawire, said Mtekema and Emmanuel Chipeta which prevented Elia Chilemba and Innocent Tanganyika for Epac to supply balls to their striker Ibrahim Sadik.

The Salima-based soldiers scored their first goal through Nyirenda whose well-taken free kick was too swift for Owen Chaima on Epac’s goal to tame.

Kalinda made it 2-0 13 minutes before the end of the first-half to kill the game.

The second-half was just a formality as Epac failed to organise themselves for a recovery.

“I am building a new team and the players are yet to gel. We have lost a lot of players to other teams that’s why we are having difficulties.

“But we will fight to finish in the top six. It will be difficult to contend for the title. But we are optimistic about finishing in the top six,” said Epac coach Audilow Makonyola whose side drew three successive games before this match.

Mafco coach Stereo Gondwe who is aiming for league title after missing out last year by a whisker said they are taking one game at a time.

“We are not carried away with the victory today. But I must say the boys played extremely well. If we are to win the title, we have to focus on each fixture and strategise according to the opponents’ weaknesses,” said Gondwe.
