Old Mutual fitness event attracts 300-plus

Over 300 participated in the Old Mutual Fitness Bonanza on Saturday at the College of Medicine (CoM) Sports Complex in Blantyre.

The bonanza was organised as part of the activities to celebrate the launch of its Timba Plus life insurance policy.

The Malawi Stock Exchange (MSE)-listed company’s group chief executive officer Edith Jiya said they were overwhelmed by the turnout.

“It clearly shows that we are all looking for a healthy lifestyle. By 5.15am, I was at Old Mutual car park and I was overwhelmed by the group of people I found there,” she said.

Jiya said they organised the event to introduce the new product while getting a chance to exercise and promote their health status with friends and family.

She said: “Our society has been hit by many health issues like cancer, heart diseases, diabetes etc. that are linked to inactivity and lifestyle. So, Old Mutual as a life insurance company, our mission is to protect people and their families at every stage of their lives.”

The activities started with a walk from Old Mutual offices in Blantyre to CoM, which was followed by a  three-hour aerobics session with Ulaya Classics and, thereafter, a mini basketball bonanza.

The CoM football pitch was turned into a sea of green and white, which are Old Mutual’s corporate colours,  as hundreds of fitness enthusiasts took part in the aerobics.

On the new product, Jiya said having launched the Timba Family Plan Policy, they thought it wise to extend to Timba Plus because it is a policy that accommodates extended families.

She added that the addition to the products now brings more value to policy holders as it also entitles individuals to insurance cover of their parents.

“We take the welfare of our clients as a priority, therefore, we have considered to widen the spectrum of Timba Family Plan by adding other beneficiaries to ensure that our clients have access to affordable, timely and relevant products and we are saying to Malawians—embrace this product,” Jiya said.

One of participants, Francis Mbewe from Machinjiri, described Timba Plus as unique product in time of emergencies.
