Government plans to turn the old Nkhata Bay District Hospital into a community technical college to enhance efforts aimed at empowering the youth with technical skills.
Following construction and opening of a new Nkhata Bay District Hospital, the old hospital had to be put to other use and government now wants to turn it into a community college.
Minister of Labour, Youth, Sports and Manpower Development Henry Mussa on Monday confirmed that the old hospital structures will be turned into a community college.
He said his ministry officials are working on bills of quantities to determine how much will be needed to renovate the facility and turn it into a community college.
The minister said the current community technical college at Tukombo in the district will be turned into a skills development centre where people who did not go to school but have talents will enrol and get certificates.
Said Mussa: “We are not closing the one at Tukombo. We invested a lot in that college, so what we will do is to turn it into a skills development centre.”
Nkhata Bay district health officer Albert Mkandawire also confirmed that the structures at the old hospital will be used as community technical college.
He said there was no need to have a health facility at the old hospital as the new one is close; hence, easy access to the hospital. n
