Oldies phungwe at Motel Paradise

If you are a fan of Malawi’s 80s and 90s hits, the place to be tomorrow is Motel Paradise in Blantyre as Entertainers Promotions, brings a 10-hour music performance by bands that dominated the scene three decades ago.

Dubbed ‘Oldies Night’, the music show targets those that enjoyed music performances some decades ago and brings Zomba-based Police Orchestra, Sir Paul Banda, Coss Chiwalo, Paul Subili, Rod Valamanja and Alleluya Band.

There will also be a period to listen to the hottest songs of the moment as the organisers have ropped in musician of the moment Skeffa Chimoto and his Real Sounds Band.

Entertainers Promotions director Jai Banda said there is more fun for revelers in 2014.

Jai said the idea for the show originates from the reaction he got from fans during the Carlsberg Bash on New Year Eve where, he says, patrons enjoyed Sir Paul and Alleluya Band’s music to the extent of asking for an encore.

“I am in entertainment not for money, but to create fun for fun-lovers and the hardiest thing is to ensure that everyone is served. We had an urban music night on Christmas Eve which targeted the youths and as we begin another year, we have considered those in adult age and liked the best bands of their time,” said Jai.

Police Orchestra vocalist Andrew Kamangwa said preparations for the show are underway.

“We lack such platforms and we are taking advantage of it to perform all our songs. At most shows, we are giving less than an hour and we fail to exhaust our list. Our message to fun-lovers is that we are ready for them and we promise fireworks,” he said.
