On compassion

Akossa,

Congratulations on a beautiful article regarding the source and value of real happiness. I think you got it perfect when you identified compassion as the source of true happiness.

The Dalai Lama is a very wise and humble person. I see that you have read him well. I wish you all the best as you create those ripples in a pond which keep moving outward and touching the lives of many.

May I say that where the Dalai Lama comes from (Tibet), there is general poverty. The sense of humility and piety of the people is, however, way beyond anything one would experience here. I think what has gone wrong with our society is not related to poverty but to the notion that as long as one is not seen it is in order to be as worthless as possible. That then allows all manner of mischief to be engaged in.

If there was a sense of self-worth, it would come with the understanding of personal responsibility and doing right for the sake of right or for the sake of one’s self-esteem. Then it would not matter so much that one makes a good impression on others as it would that one does the right thing and is rewarded by self-satisfaction and being able to live with oneself.

I am telling myself not to lose hope in the ways that I see in Malawi. Articles like yours give me reason to continue hoping.

All the best and keep the ideas flowing.

Modecai Msisha.
