A 60 year-old man has died after being involved in a road accident in Chikwawa.

Chikwawa Police Station spokesperson Dickson Matemba said the accident occurred on the night of 11 October 2021 at Presscane junction along Chikwawa-Nchalo M1 road.

Matemba has identified the deceased as Laiti Malio of Biasi village, Traditional Authority Maseya in the district.

The police publicist said the accident involved a Frieghtliner truck Registration NA7608/SA7859 which was being driven by Imulani Katimbe, 28 of Poya village Traditional Authority Mpama in Chiradzulu District.

According to him, the truck was being driven from Blantyre heading to Nchalo for loading at Illovo Sugar Company and upon arrival at the said place the driver hit the cyclist who was heading in the same direction.

Matemba further said the victim was rushed to Chikwawa District Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

He said postmortem results revealed that death occurred due to head injuries.

Meanwhile, the driver has been arrested and will be taken to court to answer the charge of causing death by reckless driving which is contrary to section 126 of Road Traffic Regulations Act.

Police in the district have warned drivers to observe road signs and speed limits to avoid accidents.
