One person died when a vehicle he was travelling in caught fire after colliding with another vehicle at Chipasula Turn-off on Chidzanja Road in Lilongwe on Sunday.

Lilongwe Police spokesperson Kingsley Dandaula confirmed the accident, but said he did not have details.

Witnesses said the accident happened when a taxi going to Chipasula tried  to cross Chidzanja Road, but was hit by a pickup, resulting in the taxi catching fire.

“We managed to rescue the passenger in the vehicle, but we failed to rescue the driver because his legs were trapped and there was a fierce fire,” said Salome Msuwo.

Meanwhile, Dandaula said three children died at Nathenje in Lilongwe on Friday when an articulated truck hit an ox-cart which had four people on board.

He identified the deceased as Hamilton Sainani (14), four-year-old Abison Evans and Vickiel Kanyansi (10).
