Balaka Women Orange Achievers, a wing of Malawi’s ruling People’s Party (PP), on Friday donated various items to Balaka District Hospital.

The gift included beds, mattresses, wheelchairs, office chairs and mops.

The group also cheered the sick in the hospital wards where they gave them sugar, salt and soap.

Receiving the items, district health officer Owen Chikhwaza commended the group, saying the gifts will help alleviate some of the problems the hospital was facing.

“As a district hospital, we are facing an acute shortage of beds and mattresses. Patients are forced to sleep on the floor [and] this donation will ease that problem,” said Chikhwaza.

Said the group’s vice-chairperson Maureen Mbewe: “We noted that this problem [the shortage] was hindering service delivery at the hospital and we thought we could assist with this little contribution.”

According to Mbewe, some of the items were sourced from Malawi Good Life.

The hospital serves a population of over 350 000.
