Malawi football legend Yasin Osman and controversial administrator Julius Mithi are the most notable inclusions in the newly-appointed Malawi National Council of Sports board of directors.

“I do not know anything. Anyway, I feel honoured to be considered for such a high position in sports. I hope to contribute to sports development in general,” Osman said on Tuesday.

The Office of the President and Cabinet released the names of the new board members on Tuesday with the Reverend Dr. Lazarus Chakwera maintaining his seat as chairperson and former Sports Ministry’s Principal Secretary Emmanuel Gondwe as his new deputy. Gondwe has taken over from Dr. Tikhala Chibwana.

Veteran sports administrator Dean Pinto has also returned to the board he once served as vice-chairperson. Gywynth Mchiela and ex-Silver Strikers general secretary Gibson Mkanda and veteran netball official Grace Thipa are other new faces in the board. Wilma Chalulu has also retained her seat in the board.

Of the nine members in the board, six have depth and wealth of experience either as coaches, administrators, sports sponsors or managers; hence, more would be expected in giving ailing Malawi sports policy direction.
