Organisation for Sustainable Socio-Economic Development initiative (Ossedi) has asked the Malawi Government to construct a rumble surface and a hump at Mbalame Primary School along the Lumbadzi-Dowa-Chezi Road.

The road, which is under construction, has attracted a number of motorists passing to and fro Dowa Boma.

Speaking in an interview on Monday, Ossedi Malawi programme manager Thotho Chimbiya said Mbalame Pimary School is accident prone as students of both the primary school and the nearby community day secondary school cross the road to fetch water at a nearby borehole.

Ossedi Malawi, which is implementing water, sanitation and hygiene (Wash) programmes in Dowa said despite having a zebra crossing, accidents stiil occur frequently.

Chimbiya said Malawi should emulate Tanzania where they have rumble surfaces and humps near trading centres and schools to slow down oncoming vehicles.

He also said the situation is the same with Aimala Ndiwo Primary School on the Lilongwe-Kasungu M1 Road, where teachers and school-going children are at risk of being hit by speeding vehicles.

Dowa District Council director of planning and development Emmanuel Bulukutu said he asked National Road Safety Council of Malawi (NRSCM), to teach the school-going children whose schools are along busy roads, how to use the roads to prevent accidents. n
