Pagan opens Cobbe Barracks church

As one way of instilling self-reliance among Catholic faithful, members of Holy Family Church at Cobbe Barracks in Zomba have built a K60 million modern church.

Members of the new church which has taken 13 years to construct, who are soldiers, started contributing money towards the project in 2002.

According to sources in the church, there was an internal arrangement whereby every Catholic soldier was making monthly contributions from their salaries and the money was being deducted at source.

Speaking when he opened and dedicated the church, Mangochi Diocese Bishop Emeritus Allessandro Pagan, asked the faithful to continue working together for the development of the Church.

“You have shown that it is possible for Christians to do some development projects without relying on outside help. Now that you have constructed the church on your own, may you also keep on showing love to one another and take good care of this house of God,” Pagan advised the Holy Family faithful.

He urged Catholics and Christians of other churches to emulate the example set by the Cobbe Barracks Catholic faithful.

Malawi Defence Force (MDF) Commander, General Ignacio Maulana, who was the guest of honour, hailed Holy Family church members for such a wonderful and expensive infrastructure.

According to the chairperson of the organising committee, Paul Kainga, they thought of building their own church because they did not have a place of worship.
