Parishioners mobilize resources for priest’s house
Christians at Chingadzi Catholic Parish in Thyolo have mobilised themselves to raise funds for building a new house for their priest.
The initiative comes after a fierce fire gutted the old parish priest’s house on November 9 last year.
The fire left Father Frank Mwinganyama, the priest assigned to serve Chingadzi parishioners, homeless and is currently operating from Pius XII Seminary, 20 kilometres from what ought to be his base.
A member of the fundraising committee Felix Chome said following the incident, Christians mobilised themselves to in conjunction with the leadership of the Archdiocese of Blantyre under which the parish falls to build a new house for the priest.
“Since then, we have been holding Paper Sundays and on October 6 2013, we are having a mock wedding for the same cause,” said Chome.
He said so far the parishioners have raised K1 million against a budget of K15 million.
Chome appealed to well-wishers for support by patronising their fundraising events.
“Our prayer is that those who can should assist us achieve our dream,” he said.
Father Mwinganyama confessed that he is facing challenges to discharge his duties because of the distance he travels to access his parishioners.
“It is not easy. Every time I am needed by my parishioners, I have to find means of transport to the area,” he said.
