The Malawi National Assembly has come up with posters that depict all the current 193 legislators.

Speaker of Parliament Henry Chimunthu Banda described the move as way of bringing Parliament closer to people.

The Institute for Parliamentary Support in Africa (Ipsa) supported production of the posters.

Speaking during the handover and launch of the posters, Chimunthu Banda said one of the main objectives in the National Assembly’s 2010-2015 strategic plan is taking Parliament to the people and the posters will serve to fulfil that objective.

“These posters would ensure Parliament’s presence in all the 193 constituencies. They will also enable people know more about Parliament,” he said.

Ipsa co-executive director Kimberly Smiddy said her organisation believes that many people want to know more about their MPs, but were being denied such an opportunity due to lack of materials.

Kimberly said it was her wish that one day the posters will be available in most places and hung alongside the portrait of the Head of State.
