Vote number 310, the Ministry of Health (MoH), attracted the most attention with members seeking to find out from Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development Goodall Gondwe justification for the increase in funding allocation.

The vote was initially given K81.9 billion and had been revised to K86.9 billion, representing a K5 billion increase.

First to contribute was former vice-president Khumbo Kachali, who is also Mzimba South-West MP (People’s Party-PP). He wanted to find out why government was not able to fund medical doctors who were stranded in South Africa where they were specialising in various fields.

Salima North-East MP Jessie Kabwila (Malawi Congress Party-MCP) also demanded answers from the minister on MoH’s capacity to provide jobs to people.

Dedza East MP Juliana Lunguzi (MCP) queried the minister to explain the status of the cancer centre which she said had taken time to progress.

“A lot of women are dying due to this disease and yet we approved that the project must begin to take shape, what is happening,” she said.

In his response, Minister of Health Peter Kumpalume said governemt would take care of all doctors and more doctors would be funded.
