Parliamentary, Local government by-elections slated for Dec 22

The Malawi Electoral Commission has announced that it will conduct Parliamentary and Local Government by-elections on December 22 2015.

The by-elections will take place in Zomba Chisi constituency as well as Mtope Ward in Mchinji West and Ngala Ward in Lilongwe Msozi North constituencies.

In a statement released today, MEC’s chief elections officer Willie Kalonga said registration and inspection of the voters’ register will take place from the 26 to 30th of this month.

“Presentation of nomination papers will be on 1st December, 2015 with the official campaign running from 2nd December to6am on 20th December 2015,” he said.

 

Kalonga added that the   Commission will on Saturday, November 21 hold meetings in the three areas to launch the by-elections and brief stakeholders on the electoral calendar.

 

He said the meetings will take place St Paul Teachers Development Centre (TDC) in Zomba Chisi Constituency, at Chikanga TDC in Ngala Ward and at Chimteka TDC in Mtope Ward from 8am.

 

During a National Elections Consultative Forum (Necof) meeting in Blantyre last week Friday, MEC chairperson Justice Maxon Mbendera said the Ministry of Finance has released K200 million ($340,674) for the by-elections.

 

Zomba Chisi constituency fell vacant following the death of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) parliamentarian Peter Chizalo Mangulenje on September 23 2015.

Mtope Ward in Mchinji also fell vacant following the death of Malawi Congress Party Councillor John Msumatiza on July 26 2015 while Ngala ward in Lilongwe fell vacant following the resignation of Councillor Misheck Khomba on September 8 2015.
