Political parties in Likoma on Sunday signed a code of conduct to encourage a spirit of tolerance and coexistence among them ahead of the May 20 Tripartite Elections.

The code of conduct was drafted by the district Multiparty Liaison Committee (MPLC) as one way of ensuring free and fair elections in the district.

Likoma district commissioner Peter Jimusole hailed the parties for coming together and committing to being tolerant during political campaigns in the district.

“Elsewhere, when two political parties come within an arm’s reach of each other, clashes are bound to erupt. But looking at this today in Likoma, I am impressed and I am sure we are going to have peaceful, free, fair and credible elections on May 20,” he said.

Jimusole appealed to the party governors to adhere to the code of conduct.

The parties present included United Democratic Front (UDF), People’s Party (PP), Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). There was also one independent MP.
