Dilemma over regional elections

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has called on political parties to collect nomination papers for the May 20 Tripartie Elections through the Centre for Multiparty Democracy (CMD).
In a statement dated January 15 2015, MEC has also asked independent candidates for parliamentary and local government elections to collect nominations from their respective councils.
“The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) is informing all duly registered political parties wishing to contest in the 2014 tripartite elections that they should request nomination papers through the Centre for Multiparty Democracy (CMD).
“The commission has planned that candidates standing on a political party ticket should get nomination forms from their secretary generals who also have to endorse the nomination of their candidates,” reads in part the statement signed by chief elections officer Willie Kalonga.
The statement further says all independent candidates for Parliamentary and Local Government Elections will get the nomination papers from their respective councils from January 16 to February 14 2014, but independent presidential candidates will get nomination papers from the chief elections officer during the same period.
The statement also asked political parties to indicate the quantity of nomination papers for the presidency, parliamentary and local government elections.
Submission of forms will be from February 10 to 14 2014.
