Neno-based Partners in Health has donated intravenous (IV) Fluids worth $35 694 (about K35.6 million) to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) to assist acutely sick patients and those undergoing surgical procedures.

Speaking during the handover on Tuesday, the organisation’s communications specialist Janet Mbwadzulu said they donated to QECH because it is the main referral for patients from Neno District Hospital and it also treats severe Covid-19 cases in the Southern Region.

She said: “When we inquired from QECH, they indicated that they were in need of these fluids.

“So, when we got this supply, we thought of donating some to the hospital.”

Mbwadzulu also said they previously donated Covid-19 rapid diagnostic test kits and personal protective equipment to the referral hospital.

On her part, QECH principal pharmacist Christina Mwinjiwa said the donation, enough to cover about a month and a half, will help the hospital a lot.

She said: “All the wards here at QECH require IV fluids, but it is the cancer and burns wards that consume this commodity the most.

“IV fluid is used when administering some medication and rehydrating patients who have lost a lot of electrolytes.”

While appealing for more donations of the commodity, Mwinjiwa indicated that QECH uses about 140 litres of ringer lactate IV fluids and 270 litres of normal saline IV fluids in a day.
