Penalties for lacking latrines in Chikwawa

Traditional leaders in Chikwawa have given their subjects without pit latrines up toJanuary 31 2015 to dig one or face unspecified action.

The ultimatum was made on Thursday in Traditional Authorities (T/As) Makhuwira and Chapananga where Water Aid conducted water, sanitation and hygiene awareness in conjunction with the National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust.

Toilets_latrinesWater Aid and Nice Trust are implementing a Citizen Action Initiative Project, which aims to empower citizens to demand water and sanitation services from duty-bearers, including elected leaders.

Speaking at Savala Safe Haven, Group Village Head (GVH) Kanyimbiri said chiefs under T/A Makhuwira resolved to penalise every household that does not adhere to good sanitation and hygiene practices, including hand washing and proper usage of latrines to prevent diseases.

Water Aid programme officer Natasha Mwenda said clean water and sanitation are essential elements in achieving a basic standard of health for the people; hence, the decision by her organisation to embark on this project in Chikwawa.
