Peter heads DPP

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has officially appointed Peter Mutharika as the party’s interim president replacing his brother who died on Thursday following a cardiac arrest.

The appointment also comes at a time when massive defections have hit the party, with over 50 parliamentarians and Cabinet ministers openly expressing support for Joyce Banda’s People’s Party (PP) and her government.

Meanwhile, the new DPP interim president has sent a congratulatory message to Malawi’s new State President Joyce Banda.

“We wish her well in her office and as a party, we are more than willing to offer our support to her,” said Mutharika in a message relayed through party secretary general Kamanga.

On the change of allegiance and defection to Banda’s People’s Party reports, Kamanga said he also heard about the developments but was yet to get official communication from the MPs and ministers involved.
