If I were

Peter Mutharika

President of the Republic of Malawi, I would take the advice given by the Reverend Takuze Chitsulo in his sermon during the celebrations to mark 125 years of existence of St Michael and All Angels Church, to deal with social ills affecting the country, in particular the elite accumulating wealth at the expense of the poor masses.

If I were APM, I would appreciate that while I am doing well in the campaign to stop the killings of persons with albinism, my government has not done enough to fight the plundering of public resources.

Oh yes, Your Excellency, as a Christian myself, I would realise that the sermon should give me plenty food for thought on the issues raised, especially where the elite continues to benefit when the poor are struggling to make ends meet.

I would realise that what the man of God meant is that it is unfair that those that are plundering the economy are still living a luxurious life out there because they have ‘connections’ when a poor man who stole a chicken is languishing in jail.

That is if only I were the President, but, unfortunately, it is a mere fantasy for I cannot be him. n
