If I were

President of the Republic of Malawi, I would realise that as we conclude the year 2015 and look forward to 2016, it is time to reflect on whether I am performing in accordance with expectations.

I would realise if I were APM that the major issue this year was fixing the economy, but I did more talking and giving assurances and Malawians embraced these assurances, hoping against all odds that a ray of light would appear at the end of the tunnel. But alas, things continued to take a downward plunge.

Oh yes if I were the President, I would realise that Malawians expect me to slow down on talking and travelling—domestically and internationally—and concentrate on fixing the economy which is taking its toll on their day-to-day lives.

If I were him, I would cut back on my fixation with purchasing a jet, oh yes, cut back on blaming my predecessor Joyce Banda for the economic mess because that is the whole essence that Malawians put me in power—to sort out such problems and not turn to a blame game.

I would realise that in 2016, Malawians expect me to demonstrate that I am in control, by among other things, controlling corruption and managing local revenue and that is when Malawians will clap hands for you. Wishing you a Happy New Year, Your Excellency! n
