If I were

Peter Mutharika

President of the Republic of Malawi, I would realise that when starvation reaches a point whereby my people are queuing for maize husks (madeya), then things have gone terribly wrong.

Much as my government is trying its best to contain the situation, I would appreciate that the situation is getting out of hand; hence, the need to treat the issue urgently.

Oh yes, if only I were APM, I would appreciate that madeya is food for pigs and chickens and when people queue for such stuff because either the maize commodity is scarce or they cannot afford, then it is cause for worry.

How I wish I were the President, because much as I continue to live in denial and insist that no one will die of hunger, the situation on the ground is different and scary.

Oh yes, Mr. President it is even more disturbing when the symbol of my party is maize—which assured voters that they would have plenty of it—yet now the same voters cannot afford or access it. I would realise, if I were President, the need to conduct some soul-searching regarding the situation.

That is if only I were His Excellency the President of the Republic of Malawi, but it is just a mere fantasy for I remain a poor scribe that is Garry Chirwa. n
