If I were

Peter Mutharika

Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister, I would realise that the person who needs to be schooled that we cannot do without donors is, in fact, my own brother Bingu wa Mutharika, who happens to be the President of this country.

I would realise, if I were the good professor, that what I said after meeting the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that Malawi cannot do without aid is contrary to my brother’s telling off of Western donors, who are currently withholding millions of dollars in general budget support.

If I were bwana Peter, I would take the initiative to tell my brother that whether he likes it or not, Malawi cannot do without donor aid.

I would ask my brother, otherwise known as the Ngwazi, to slow down and take advice on the matter.

If I were Peter Mutharika, I would pump some sense into my brother that budget support from traditional donors’ accounts for about 40 percent of the total national budget.

That is, of course, if I were the good man that is Peter. Unfortunately, I am not him!
