Lands and Housing Minister Henry Phoya Tuesday morning apologised to the Chewa for comments he made on Friday last week when he defected to the ruling People’s Party (PP).

Speaking to Zodiak Radio, Phoya said it was important that he apologised because the call to do so was also made by people of goodwill.

In an interview with The Nation Tuesday, chairperson of the Chewa Foundation Heritage (Chefo) Dr. Justin Malewezi said he was happy with the apology.

Said Malewezi: “We have not received a written apology yet; in fact, I have also heard it on the radio. Nonetheless, we are happy because our demand has been met.”

Chefo on Monday asked Phoya to apologise for hitting at Gule Wamkulu culture last week when he was justifying why he left Malawi Congress Party (MCP) to join PP.

He was quoted on Zodiak as saying he was not fully welcome into the party as he was not initiated into the Gule Wamkulu cult.
