Phyzix: I am one of the pioneers of Malawi rap

Hip-hop artist Phyzix last week made a comeback with a new single titled Chi Nyimbo, while announcing details of his upcoming LP, which will be released by July.

The rapper, who is also fondly called Phyzo by followers, disclosed his next project, which is coming after two years in hibernation, is titled Gamba wa Suit.

Speaking in an interview, the rapper, real name Noel Chikoleka, said: “I am finalising the LP and am thinking of releasing it between June and July. I feel my comeback is on the right track.”

Chi Nyimbo, which is on radio and available for free download on www.malawi-music.com, was produced by the Daredevilz of Low Budget Records and was mixed and mastered by Blaq Falcon Bird.

The song features rappers Gwamba and Martse as well as singer Emm Q on the hook.

With the latest release, Phyzix, who recently moved to Blantyre where he is working as a banker, declares superiority to other hip-hop artists.

“Chi Nyimbo is a declaration of superiority,” he proclaimed. “I am one of the pioneers of Malawi rap, [so] I am an elder.”

The rapper, who grew up in Area 25 in the Capital City and came onto the limelight in 2006 after releasing his first hit single Cholapitsa, claimed he had created a legacy through his rap career.

“I have the Cholapitsa and Gamba legacies. I have the ghetto rap legacy, the hardcore rap legacy and the Area 25 legacy,” said Phyzix.

Besides Chi Nyimbo, Phyzix has also recorded album tracks which feature new R&B singer Eddie as well as hip-hop artists Mwanache, Krazie G and Lady Pace, among others.

Previously, Phyzix has released three mixtapes called The Overdue (2006), Black Starz Don Shyne (2007), The Phyzo (2008) and two albums titled The Lone Ranger (2009) and Secret Service (2011).

His music is also called Phyzix because it embraces his scope of energetic, passionate delivery paired with intelligence and substance. He fuses hardcore hip-hop, afro-beat and lyrical crunk and generally creates characters and delivers messages in a comic way through these characters. The name ‘Phyzix’ means a person strong both physically and at heart.

He has collaborated and worked with UK’s Sway DaSafo of Konvict Music, UK’s Dekker & Johan (Radioclit), The Very Best, KoNd-1, Tapps Bandawe, Tay Grin, Theo Thomson, Young Kay, Lulu, Piksy and the Daredevilz, just to mention a few.

Phyzix has also shared stage with K’naan during his Malawi visit few years ago.
