Government and Football Association of Malawi have said the August 11 date for the final of the Presidential Cup final match between Big Bullets and Moyale Barracks is subject to confirmation.

Principal secretary in the Ministry of Youth and Sports Alex Mseka on Tuesday said the exact date will be announced after getting response from the office of the President [Joyce Banda] on whether she will grace the final match.

“Obviously, this being the final of the Presidential Cup, we’ll have to request Her Excellency to grace the occasion and depending on the response, we’ll be able to confirm the actual final date.

“The August 11 date is just tentative and probably by next week, we should have a clear picture on where and when the final match will take place,” said Mseka.

However, Mseka hinted that the match might be played either in Mzuzu or Lilongwe.

“The pattern has been that we have been rotating and if we follow that pattern, then the match could take place either in Lilongwe or Mzuzu, but again that will be subject to confirmation,” Mseka said.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) chief executive officer Suzgo Nyirenda also said they are waiting for official communication from government on the venue and the actual date.

“Of course, the proposed date is August 11, but we are yet to get government’s official position,” he said.

Last year’s final match between Mighty Wanderers and Mafco was staged at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre and the Nomads won 1-0.

Former president late Bingu wa Mutharika graced the inaugural final in 2009 between Wanderers and Escom United which the Nomads also won on penalties.
