Plan International on Thursday handed over a girls’ hostel to Enyezini Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) in Mzimba.

The rural community requested for the hostel to save girls from long walks to school, said Plan country director Daniel Muchena.

“We are happy to officially hand over this hostel to communities around the school. We learnt that girls walked long distances when going to school which, in turn, was affecting their performance in class,” he said.

Muchena said the hostel will also reduce teen pregnancies, early marriages and sexual exploitation among girls. Some of the learners at the school were living in unregulated, self-boarding facilities in neighbouring villages.

Ministry of Education, Science and Technology director of administration Hilary Mainja, commended the international non-governmental organisation for complementing government’s efforts to ensure every girl remains in school until her dream comes true.

“Usually, girls from rural communities fail to further their education mainly because of long distances to school. This is why we are thankful to Plan International for their timely donation,” he said.
