Lilongwe Play Football Malawi Academy says it is ready to offer its wealth of talent to willing Super League teams, but with strings attached.

The academy’s technical director and manager Davie Mpima made the offer during the week when asked about the progress of the academy and what it has to show for its efforts in the last two years.

The academy has teams that train around Lingadzi area where ground construction has started in earnest with an aim of a full-fledged facility in the near future.

“Super League teams can come and get players from us, but only on loan as our ultimate mission is to, in the next two years, export these players to another high level in European countries such as Germany and Switzerland where we have connections,” said Mpima.

“We have many talented players and we even contributed Rogers Sakala to the Malawi Under-17 national team that took part in Zone VI games in Zimbabwe recently. The other cream in our Under-16 squad include Frank Mwadini, Yobu Chirwa, Grevazio Shuta, Paul Nkhoma, Laza Mwale,”

The academy, which also boasts teams for players Under-8, 12, 14, 16 and 20, was founded by George Maguire of Switzerland.

“We also have well-wishers in the United Kingdom who are helping us with our project. We have a ground where the children come to learn football. The next stage is wall construction which is in progress,” he said.

The Lilongwe academy is among the growing phenomenon of academies such as Kangaroo and Surestream of Blantyre.

Mpima and Sylus Liwindo of Play Soccer recently took part in a Scottish FA Advanced Children’s Licence tutorial. This licence provides a recognised qualification for adults working with young players aged five to 12 years.
