Former Catholic students of The Polytechnic will this weekend meet in Salima to elect office bearers, develop communications strategy and set up the skills basket for Polytechnic Catholic Society (Pocas).

In an interview, acting Pocas national coordinator Joseph Dongolosi said, among others, the objective is to formally incorporate the group in the Catholic Church structure and effectively contribute towards development of the church in Malawi.

Dongolosi: We want to harness talent

Dongolosi also said the skills basket will facilitate Pocas members who are professionals to offer their services to the Catholic Church in the country.

“We recognise that the Catholic Church in Malawi and world over is very rich in human capital and talent. The challenge has been how to harness and utilise this readily available talent,” said Dongolosi.

Apart from electing the committee, the meeting will also discuss the adoption of a scholarship fund.

“We realise there are many young, brilliant children in society who are financially disadvantaged. These are students who struggle to attain tertiary education or be it total failure to achieve their dreams due to lack of financial support,” he said. n
