Police accident death toll rises to three

One more police officer involved in a road accident in Lunzu, Blantyre on Wednesday has died, bringing the number of fatalities to three.

Deputy National Police spokesperson Nicholas Gondwa confirmed the death yesterday and identified the female police officer as Sophie Kalele Chibowa, a detective at Soche Police Station in Blantyre.

The accident occurred along Zalewa Road at a place called Ken between Kameza and Lunzu when a police vehicle registration MP 2340 collided with a stationary truck registration CZ 5281, which had allegedly developed a puncture in one of its front tyres.

Another female police officer, Thandiwe Kalonga, and her aunt Beatrice Masa died on the spot while six others sustained serious injuries.

The officers were returning from Mlambe Hospital at Lunzu where they went to cheer a patient related to one of the officers.

Chibowa, who is expected to be buried today at her home village in Zomba, died yesterday morning after sustaining serious head injuries while five other survivors are receiving medical attention at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital.
These include Boniface Kalonga, his sister Blandina, driver of the police vehicle Christopher Mbewe and Evelyn Damiano.
