Police arrest man for motor vehicle theft

Police in Lilongwe on Thursday arrested Kingsley Mponda Banda, 29, for alleged motor vehicle theft within the city.

Central Region Police assistant spokesperson, Patrick Kasakula confirmed the issue.

“The suspect was arrested by Anti-motor Theft Unit police officers while driving a stolen vehicle at Mchezi police roadblock along Lilongwe- Salima Road.

“At the time of the arrest, the suspect had changed the vehicle registration number from CK 5559 to BV 8974,” he said.

Kasakula said on February 9 2019, the suspect hired the vehicle registration CK5559, Mazda Scrum whose driver was Mavuto Dingiliro.

He said the suspect asked the driver to allow him to use the vehicle for private outing with his girlfriend.

The driver accepted, but at a fee of K3 000. He said the suspect then drove off with the woman on board, leaving him behind.

He said surprisingly, moments later, it was reported that the suspect had dumped the woman within Area 22 and bolted to an unknown destination with a handbag and two mobile phones and money amounting to K28 000.

After being arrested, the driver helped the officers to recover the vehicle.
