Police commissioner Matinga dies, burial today

Burial of former Commissioner of Police for Eastern Region, Wilson Matinga, will take place today at his home village, Mitepa, Traditional Authority (T/A) Mpama in Chiradzulu.

Matinga died on Monday at Malosa in Zomba after collapsing during a community policing forum, according National Police spokesperson Rhoda Manjolo.

She said Matinga was addressing the forum when he felt dizzy and collapsed as he was trying to sit down.

“He was rushed to St. Luke’s Mission Hospital in Malosa where he was diagnosed with high blood pressure [BP] and malaria and was on oxygen therapy when he died,” said Manjolo.

A holder of a bachelor of social science degree majoring in Economics, the late Matinga joined the service on January 18 1997.

He was promoted to the position of commissioner on December 24 2010.

Matinga has worked as commissioner of police for Northern, Eastern and Southern regions in that order, before returning to the Eastern Region.

He is survived by a wife and two children.n
