Police enforce order at Lilongwe Bus Depot

Police in Lilongwe in partnership with the city council have removed minibuses and taxis from operating in undesignated spaces in the city.

The operation comes a week after the law enforces arrested people posing as passengers at Lilongwe Bus Depot to lure prospective customers.

The special operation was jointly conducted on Wednesday alongside the Minibus Owners Association of Malawi (Moam) and Lilongwe Vendors Association.

Speaking during the exercise, Lilongwe Police Station community policing coordinator Malango Mwasinga said operating from undesignated spaces was a recipe for chaos.

He said: “Wrong parking creates congestion which facilitates crime because thieves take advantage where there is disorder.

“We don’t want vehicles to line up both sides of the road.”

Lilongwe Police Station operations officer Dingaan Njolomole and patrol commander George Mbayani said they will continue enforcing the measures to ensure safety in the city.

Lilongwe City Council director of commerce Genscher Mbwabwa commended the police for the operation.

He said the exercise will bring sanity along Malangalanga Road where congestion is a problem.

Mbwabwa condemned touts who claim to own certain sections along the road, saying it is only the city council which is the sole landlord of the city.

On his part, Moam national chairperson Herman Msowoya encouraged the police to enforce the law to ensure sanity in the city.
