Police in Mzuzu have launched a hunt for Chibanja Ward councilor Charles Mlogera, who disappeared from court prior to judgement last Friday.

The Malawi Congress Party (MCP) affiliated councillor is accused of abducting and defiling three girls in October 2016.

Northern Region Police spokesperson Peter Kalaya said Mlogera disappeared before 9am when first grade magistrate Alexander Gomba was about to pronounce his verdict.

Said Kalaya: “The case came for judgement on March April 20 2018, and Mlogera was present at the court. However, he disappeared before court sitting at 9am. With his lawyers present, the case was adjourned to 1pm the same day, but he did not turn up.

Gomba then revoked the suspect’s bail, saying although it was issued by the High Court, this was a different court.

“I can now confirm that we have a warrant to arrest him. He may have run away, but he cannot outrun the long arm of the law. We will certainly arrest him soon.” Kalaya said.

Mlogera’s lawyer, Mustafa Amidu of Atkin Chambers, said he also just heard of his client’s disappearance but  did not have further details.

Mlogera, 34, comes from Kanjati Village in Traditional Authority Kwataine in Ntcheu District. n
