Police in Mchinji are looking for people who masqueraded as Gule Wamkulu dancers and looted K3.5million items from  a shop at Nkhalambayasamba Trading Centre in the district.

The looters suspect the shop owner killed their friend through witchcraft, according to police.

Mchinji Police Station spokesperson Kaitano Lubrino said Rabson Wisalamu, 38, who was also doing business at the trading centre, died on June 3 at St. Gabriel Mission Hospital after a short illness.

Lubrino: There were about 20 looters

He said police investigations established that the deceased had been at loggerheads with Kaphale July, 56, of Chifuka Village,Traditional Authority (T/A) Mavwere in the district.

“This development prompted the bereaved family to link Wisalamu’s death with the sour relations he had with July and thought he (July) was the mastermind.

“Immediately after burial, July claimed to have been receiving death threats from the deceased’s relatives. The situation forced him to leave his home for safety,” said Lubrino.

Police have detained group village head Kabuthu, (real name Tenthani) Nsaima, 46, and Nkhalambayasamba Trading Centre chairperson Daniel Joseph, 40, of Chikwawa Village, both from T/A Mavwere in the district. Wisalamu came from Nani Village in the same T/A. n
