“After receiving the report about the crime, we immediately followed it up and we were notified that members of the community wanted to burn the two suspects alive. As police, we always appreciate the support community members render to us in combating crime, but they should know that mob justice is a crime,” said Chigalu.

Meanwhile, the two suspects have not been charged yet as investigations are underway and a manhunt for the other suspect has been launched. This is not the first time for police officers to be linked to a robbery in recent years.

In 2014, two police officers , C o n s t a b l e Kondwani Guta of Chilobwe Police Unit in Blantyre and Ken Kamwambi of Police Mobile Service (PMS) B Company were accused of complicity in deadly and armed crimes.

Kamwambi was arrested on suspicion that he was among the masterminds of a bank robbery in which about K500 million was stolen from the Standard Bank Mzuzu Branch whereas Guta was arrested for allegedly taking part in an armed robbery at Kanjedza Township.
