Police recover stolen Strabag vehicle

Police in Mzuzu have arrested three suspected carjackers who stole a vehicle at Strabag Construction Company camp in Nkhata Bay.

Northern Region Police  assistant spokesperson Martin Bwanali said on Monday Elias Mwafulirwa, 36, of Njalayankhunda Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Wasambo in Karonga, Augustine Mkumbira, 30, of Khondowe Village, T/A M’bwana in Nkhata Bay  and a 17-year-old boy allegedly invaded the camp at Mpamba in the district on Tuesday night and stole the company’s ambulance.

Following the incident, officials at the company reported the matter to police who intercepted the three suspects the same night at Joel Roadblock on the Mzuzu-Nkhata Bay Road.

The three were arrested on the spot and police recovered the vehicle, a Toyota Townace registration NB 9381.

“CID [Criminal Investigations Department] officers arrested the suspects at Joel Roadblock around 8pm the same day,” said Bwanali.

The suspects will answer a charge of theft of a motor vehicle contrary to Section 281(I) of the Penal Code.

 Last year, the police recorded six cases of vehicle theft.
