Police in Kasungu have recovered a vehicle which was stolen early this week after the suspected robber abandoned it.

On Tuesday Kasungu Police Station deputy spokesperson Harry Namwaza said a taxi driver, Isaac Zimba, 27, was on Sunday driving a motor vehicle registration MJ 5646 when he picked a passenger who later stole the car.

He said: “It is alleged that Zimba was approached by a certain unknown man who wanted to hire his car to Chikho Hotel within the district. In the course of their journey, Zimba stopped to buy airtime, leaving the car key on the ignition.

“His alleged customer also went out to buy airtime, but was the first one to return and drove to unknown destination.”

Namwaza said the matter was reported to Kasungu Police Station and a manhunt was launched.

He said police got a tip on Tuesday that a vehicle similar to the one they were looking for had been abandoned along Dowa road.

“We went [to the scene] with the vehicle owner who identified  it. However, the vehicle had its number plates removed and we are still hunting for the suspect,” said Namwaza.n
