Police in Blantyre on Saturday rescued a 19-year-old man, a cross-dresser, from an irate mob that wanted to assault him.
According to the Blantyre Police spokesperson Elizabeth Divala, the man, Jana Magombo of Sumani Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Somba in Blantyre, is a resident of Manase Township and is well-known in the neighborhood for wearing female clothes and make-up.
Divala said that on Saturday evening people started jeering him while others attempted to physically assault him. She added that he is being kept at the police for his own protection from the mob.
“He was not arrested or detained but our officers just picked him for security reasons and was released immediately after the situation had calmed down,” Divala said.
