  Police revive 990 helpline

Malawi Police Service (MPS) has revived the 990 helpline service following a donation of handsets from Telekom Networks Malawi (TNM) and patrol vehicles from government.

TNM public relations officer Limbani Nsapato said in a telephone interview the service provider made the donation after police approached them for assistance.

police-lineHe said 23 new handsets and lines valued at K1 million were donated.

The Southern Region has received 10 of the handsets with five going to the Limbe Policing area which has five zones and the other five to Blantyre Policing area which has five zones as well.

Southern Region Police spokesperson Nicholas Gondwa said the service was hampered by faulty vehicles which rendered rapid response ineffective.

Gondwa said besides the 990 line, people can also call as follows: Blantyre zones- zone 1 Nancholi-Blantyre Central (0882433211), zone 2 Ndirande (0888270211), zone 3, Chilomoni (0888232211), zone 4 Soche-Chilobwe (0888235211), zone 5 Machinjiri-Chirimba (0888181211).

Limbe zones: zone 1 Maselema-Mudi (0882800211), zone 2 Limbe Central-Chichiri(0888226211), zone 3 Namiyango-Bangwe (0888884211), zone 4 Chinyonga-Kanjedza (0881789211) and zone 5 Mapanga-Nkolokoti (0882807211).
