Police takes back govt building from Muslim Jamaat in Mangochi

Police in Mangochi have taken and given back to government an office complex belonging to the Department of Transport and Public Works which was taken by the Mangochi Muslim Jamaat two weeks ago.

The Muslim community alleged that the land where the structures were constructed was acquired for free by government from their grandparents without compensating them when government was constructing the Liwonde-Mangochi Road in the early 1970s.

They also claimed government was not properly utilising the premises.

Confirming the development, Mangochi police publicist Rodrick Maida said last night the police mobile force went to the premises and arrested six men who were employed by the Muslim community to guard the premises.

Maida said the six have now been released on bail after presidential advisor on religious issues Timothy Khoviwa engaged the Muslim community and all stakeholders involved in a discussion this morning.

“The whole issue has been resolved, they have been told never to return to the premises and they have accepted,” Maida said adding that the situation is calm.
