Polytechnic retains Umssa inter-college games title

The Polytechnic staff emerged as overall champions of this year’s University of Malawi Staff Sports Association (Umssa) inter-college games at College of Medicine (CoM) Sports Complex in Blantyre on Saturday.

They were also the champions last year. This year they won in football, netball and athletics.

The event, which is for all University of Malawi’s (Unima) constituent colleges involved football, netball, volleyball, athletics and bawo.

But according to Mayeso Chizuma, who was the football leading goalscorer, the absence of Chancellor College and Bunda College due to transportation problems, worked to their advantage.

“Much as we are not happy with the absence of our fellow staff from other Unima constituent colleges, we feel that their absence has somehow been a blessing in disguise for us because we would have gone through hurdles to win,” said Chizuma.

CoM emerged runners-up through victories in volleyball and bawo whereas KCN and National Insurance Company (Nico) finished as third and fourth respectively.

While thanking Nico through its marketing officer Priscilla Soko, for honouring their invitation to the event, Umssa president James Chalera also appreciated the presence of Unima registrar Benedicto Okomaatani Malunga at the games.

The games were used as preparations for the 2012 Southern African University Staff Sports Association (Saussa) Games in South Africa later this year.
