Opportunity Bank of Malawi (OBM) has singled out poor road network as one of the major impediments to the success of the banking sector in the country.
OBM deputy chief executive Alice Abillu, speaking on Friday at the ‘Go for School Charity’ cocktail in Blantyre, observed that poor communication and road infrastructure remain a big challenge, impinging the banking sector in Malawi.

She disclosed that for any business to effectively deliver there is need for the country to bridge the communication gap between a service provider and an end user.
“The road network is the most challenging factor almost in the whole Africa to take the service or product to that common man in the village.
“Reliable road network is very critical when taking services and products to the least end user who is disconnected from the world because of bad road infrastructure,” said Abillu.
She said efforts by OBM to expand its business continue to face challenges because of the same problems.
Abillu, therefore, expressed gratitude for the 16 top-of-range 4×4 VW Amarok vehicles Opportunity International Deutschland (OID) donated to OBM through the dealership agreement with CFAO Malawi.
She said the vehicles will go a long way in addressing the transport problems faced when taking its services and products to the hard-to-reach areas.
