People’s Party (PP) and the governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) are the only parties set to contest the position of Mzuzu City Council (MCC) mayor.

Incumbent William Mkandawire (PP) of Mchengautuwa East Ward, whose term expires on January 8, will face DPP’s Yona Mkandawire of Masasa Ward, according to the council.

Three DPP councillors had earlier expressed interest to challenge the mayor, but the party has opted to feature one candidate.

Wants another term: Mkandawire

MCC spokesperson Karen Msiska on Tuesday confirmed that William Mkandawire and  Yona Mkandawire have expressed interest to contest the position of mayor.

He said the other DPP councillors Denis Moyo and Judith Chiumia who were said to be interested have not yet come forward.

On the position of deputy mayor, Msiska said three people have shown interest, including incumbent Frazer Chunga (Mzilawaingwe-PP), MCP councillor Alexander Mwakikunga (Katawa Ward, Malawi Congress Party-MCP) and another PP councillor Patrick Ng’oma (Chibavi East).

Msiska said those that have shown interest might not be the only ones as the council does not have powers to block anybody. n
