A People’s Party (PP) Northern Regional faction that invaded a meeting in Mzuzu has hit back at the party’s acting president Uladi Mussa for branding members that disrupted his meeting as thugs.

However, the party has maintained the thug remarks, stressing that those who disrupted the meeting were violent people and the description that suits them is thugs. The party argues that PP members value dialogue and not violence.

The faction claims Mussa invited a wrong regional committee to the meeting, adding that most of the people that attended the meeting were mere vendors.

PP invited a faction under acting provincial chairperson Sherbone Mchizi.

In an interview last week, the faction’s acting secretary Clive Nthakomwa said his camp is the genuine committee and it is unfortunate that Mussa and the party brand the members as thugs.

He said the party leadership has to respect the regional committee adding that the members invaded the meeting because they were surprised that the party leadership invited a wrong committee.

He claimed that the genuine members were curious to check why the party had sidelined them and invited other people most of them being vendors who are not royal to the party.

“We are not thugs. We are the genuine committee. A wrong committee was invited to the meeting so we were surprised that we were being sidelined. We were also informed that Kachali and Ngwira were invited to the meeting, hence we were eager to see what would happen,” said Nthakomwa.

PP spokesperson Ken Msonda said Mussa was right to brand the people that disturbed the meeting as thugs adding that the party’s position is also that the invaders were thugs.

“The bottom line is our youth and other members are much disciplined. They do not engage in such kind of thug life,” he said.
