Malawi Congress Party (MCP) president Lazarus Chakwera has said he will put an end to the ‘mafia way of governing’ by the People’s Party (PP) led government once he gets into power in May.

Speaking during a Tambala Night at Sunbird Mzuzu on Friday, Chakwera said people have suffered under the PP administration.

He bemoaned drug shortage in hospitals, hunger and late payment of civil servants salaries and other anomalies which he said are killing Malawians.

Reacting to Chakwera’s attack, PP spokesperson Ken Msonda on Sunday said MCP has no clue of how government is run in a democratic set-up and PP cannot waste time reacting to it.

“We don’t have time to waste commenting on unfounded allegations aimed at denting the integrity, good reputation and image of our party and its leadership; by a party that has no clue on how government is run a democratic set-up,” said Msonda.

Chakwera said looting at Capital Hill has been the source of Malawians pain.

“We want to bring an end to cashgate. It is a Mafia way of governing. Cashgate is killing the country. Cashgate is affecting the country, there are late salaries, drug shortage and most parts of the country are experiencing hunger.

“MCP is the only party that can bring economic liberation. MCP is not a cashgate party; it is a party that will run on [principles of] accountability. We want to use clean money and traceable money,” said Chakwera.

He also warned people who are joining MCP with intentions of looting public funds once the party gets into power, to leave the party before it is too late, arguing there will be no room for cashgate once MCP assumes power.

He said the party wants national builders and not looters, adding MCP is for zero tolerance to corruption.

Chakwera said MCP members should be in forefront to fund the party, saying the party believes in sacrifice, commitment and dedication

“We are aware of parties that fundraise in a dubious way. For MCP, Tambala Night is the approach we have taken and shown for fundraising,” he said.

  1. In the spirit of accountability can MCP leadership consider publishing the amount of money collected thru the Tambala appeal so far. As members we need to know how well the party’s finances are in the run up to the general elections. Losing the upcoming general election because of lack of funds is no excuse; by publishing the Tambala appeal funds it would encourage us and all would be sponsors to contribute more to boost the balance sheet.

  2. MCP looted all Malawians for 31 years. They collected private property, used private property for their party. Killed some, tortured thousands, imprisoned many. MCP is using blood money. You owe us MCP start business to pay us back.
