PP to decide fate of ‘independent candidates’

Msonda: NEC will meet soon

The ruling People’s Party (PP) says it will soon meet to decide the fate of its members who will contest for parliamentary seats independently after losing or withdrawing from the party’s primary elections.

PP’s deputy spokesperson, Ken Msonda, told Weekend Nation that the party made it clear before the primary elections were conducted that any member who decided to contest on an independent ticket would cease to be member of the party.

Said Msonda: “Currently, plans are underway for the National Executive Committee [NEC] to meet and implement this rule.”

Some of the notable PP members who are planning to contest as independent members of Parliament include First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Jones Chingola, and former deputy minister of transport, Sam Ganda.

The future of the party’s leader in Parliament, Henry Phoya, is also in limbo after he withdrew from the party’s primary elections re-run conducted on 19 January this year.

Msonda said Phoya remains PP member until Parliament is dissolved.

“Phoya is still a member of PP, but the party will decide whether to keep him or not because it is not clear whether he will contest on independent ticket or not,” said Msonda.

  1. Someone is not teling the truth here. Is it a typigraphical error or msonda has changed his statement?
Msonda told the nation through MIJ fm and Zodiak radio stations that Hon Phoya has not resigned from the party therefore remains PP leaders of the House in Parliament.
He further said as for the issue of Hon Phoya contesting as an independed candidate, the reporter should ask Phoya himself as Msonda could not speak on behalf of Phoya, but should Phoya decide to stand as an independent candidate he automatically looses his party membership just like all others who have done so.

    So which is which?
