Three weeks after former president Joyce Banda said her People’s Party (PP) national executive committee (NEC) would meet to decide her possible candidature, the NEC is yet to meet.

In an exclusive interview with The Nation last month, Banda said the PP NEC would meet the following week in Lilongwe to elect the party leadership.

But in an interview yesterday, PP secretary general Ibrahim Matola said the party is yet to decide when the NEC will meet.

Matola: The party is yet to decide

“The party has decided to first hold regional meetings with its members before proceeding with the NEC meeting,” he said.

According to Matola, the party concluded its regional consultative meetings in the Eastern Region last week.

“Parliament is also in session so everybody is up and down,” he said.

Banda’s highly anticipated return last month drew mixed reactions from analysts who described it as politically ill-timed.n
